SHIATSU
The origin of the term 'Shiatsu' comes from the Japanese word 'Shi' which means finger and 'atsu' which means pressure - hence finger pressure. Shiatsu differs from Western forms of massage in that it goes beyond stimulation of the muscles (the primary function of Western massage). Shiatsu goes further by stimulating the meridian channels to release blocked Chi. (The principal behind acupuncture).
As opposed to therapeutic massage that uses oils and hand movements across the skin, Shiatsu is a static massage in its methods of application and pressure is applied to specific points called 'Tsubo'. A tender 'Tsubo' signifies a problem with the meridian or the system relating to that meridian. Pressures on these points help regulate the energy force (Chi) and thereby tonify the body to bring about balance to the physical state. Particular points around the body are therefore stimulated with pressure to enable a self-healing process to occur.
The word Chi refers to universal or vital energy that flows through a network of meridians within the body. In the diagnostic practice of Shiatsu, the law of 5 elements is one of the 'Laws' used to identify interactions between the meridians. If a blockage is identified, treatment is given using this law as a guide.
In all, there are 14 main meridians within the body. A meridian is energetically related to an organ but not dependant upon it. Therefore, a meridian continues to exist & function even if the organ was surgically removed.
The 5 elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. These are metaphorical concepts and NOT thought of in physical terms.
- Fire signifies a maximal state.
- Wood signifies a state of growth and associates with active functions.
- Earth signifies neutrality.
- Metal a declining state.
- Water represents maximal decline.
